Wireless Router and home internet problems

Most common problems people run into while setting up there internet at home.

1.        Remembering to power off their cable modem (comcast) or DSL modem (ATT) when changing where the modem is plugged into from your computer back into your router.

Many people verify their modem is working when troubleshooting their internet connection.  But most forget to power down their modem when they change what it is connected to.  Both DSL and CABLE modems remember the MAC address of the last device they where plugged into.  If you forget this most critical step you will never get your internet working.

2.       Not connecting cable's right.  Remember the Ethernet port of the modem is suppose to be plugged into the internet port of your router, if you have separate modem and router device. (ATT 2wire devices are modems and routers)

3.       Problems on your computer not your network. If you're not sure where your problem resides, you can start by testing your computer.

        Go to Start, then Run.

type: cmd

 hit enter

type: ipconfig

 hit enter

Do you have a default gateway and subnet mask, if you do your router is somewhat working.

Two more tests:

Verify DNS works: type: ping google.com

If you get 4 packets sent 4 received, the problem is in your web browser and not your network at all.

If you get 4 packets sent 0 received, you have a network problem for sure.

Other ideas tips and tricks:

Remember your home router also  can be configured.

Its configurations can be accessed usually via the default gateway ip address.

You can get this address by:

type: ipconfig

 hit enter

Look in your owners manual for default username and password.  Once logged in, you can see your status and change your routers configurations.
